Twenty years ago the average new home was equipped with a 100 amp electrical service and some of them used the latest in technology, circuit breakers. Now the average home is equipped with a 200 amp electrical service with a distribution panel handling up to 40, 15amp circuit breakers serving the electrical needs of the home.
Before any electrical remodeling work is started to extend your electricity from an existing source check the service panel to ensure that the fuse or breaker for the current circuit can handle the load. Old wiring and new appliances don't really mix. If you are upgrading your wiring, look at the types of appliances you will be using around your home. Some items like computers might be better served by having a dedicated circuit for it.
While it is possible to install additional outlets in your home yourself, if you are uncertain about any aspect of the job it is better to call an electrician.
Adding receptacles does not increase the available power if they are looped from other receptacles. To get more power to a location the circuit should run directly from the distribution panel. If you are planning to wire a hot tub in your house, to install a swimming pool in your back yard, to remodel a kitchen, or to build two extra bedrooms in your house, you should check the service panel first to ensure that it can handle the load.
Before any of these remodeling works you may consider replacing your electrical service panel as a top priority.
One important thing can be done to determine if the existing electrical supply was enough for getting a hot tub in your backyard ,finishing your basement with adding few baseboard heaters there or if you need to upgrade your service from 100A to 200A is to get a load calculation to your place.
Basic load is calculated depending on the house living area which represents all lights and plugs outlets around the house.Appliances will be added to the basic load like range, dryer and electrical hot water tank other loads loads will make a big difference in determining your power supply size like electrical heating furnace, baseboard heaters, electrical sauna or hot tub .
There are few steps to follow before deciding to upgrade your electrical service from 100A to 200A :
This will show Hydro part cost and will include a lay out showing where your meter will be and other instruction required by Hydro Ottawa or Hydro One
Second: Load Calculation-you ask the electrical contractor to give you a load calculation to a prove the need for upgrading your electrical service.
Third: Getting an electrical work estimate for upgrading the electrical service from 100A to 200A which will include installing a new 200A meter base,2" service mast,a new 200A electrical panel,Running the 200A service wires and moving the existing circuits from the old 100A panel to the new 200A panel.
The work mostly will be done in the same day.Hdro will disconnect the old service early morning and the electrical contractor will do the required work for upgrading the service to 200A .
ESA will be there in the same day to inspect the work and give the OK for Hydro crew to reconnect the power as 200A service.
